I am post menopausal and I have noticed a increase in the appearance of my cellulite

Menopause is a physiological process related to the increasing insufficiency of the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-ovarian axis. Skin is targeted as a response to the sequence of endocrine changes of premenopause, peri menopause and post menopause. The skin is most affected by female sex hormones such as estrogens and progesterone. low estrogen concentration is responsible for increased vascular permeability and decreased vascular tone, which lead to microcirculation impairment and are important factors predisposing to the development of cellulite. The effects of estrogen deficiency on the skin connective tissue include a decreased production and topical content of both type I and III collagen and elastin fibers, which also contributes to cellulite.

I am in my mid twenties and I am a normal BMI however I have excessive amounts of cellulite on my upper thighs

The unfortunately hash reality is that 80-90 percent of women will probably experience cellulite! The exact cause is unknown, genetic factors are strongly linked to the development of the condition as well as hormonal factors. Even people with with healthy range of BMI and active lifestyle will experience cellulite. Age is also not a preventative factor and cellulite can appear at any age and the condition is progressive with age

Will losing weight reduce my cellulite

To answer this s question it would be good to understand the anatomy of cellulite. First of there is an interaction between the connective tissue in the deeper layer of the skin and the layer of the fat that is just below it. In women, the fat cells and connective tissue in this layer are arranged vertically (in men it has a crisscrossing pattern so they are less likely to suffer from cellulite). If fat cells protrude into the layer of the skin this gives appearance of an ‘orange skin’ otherwise knowns as cellulite. In theory loosing weight may help the appearance of cellulite, however, cellulite usually appears on ‘stubborn’ areas where it is difficult to loose weigh such as outer thighs and buttocks. Cellulite specific treatments will be required.

No matter how much I exercise I cannot seem to reduce the appearance of my cellulite

Cellulite does not generally disappear with active lifestyle. Very unfortunately but not much you can do at the gym! If we go into some medical aspects of cellulite classification there is what is known as ‘alleged’ cellulite – appearing because of weakened tension of the gluteus muscle, visible on the back of thighs; it is possible to improve this state through the right exercises. However this will only apply to buttocks area.

My cellulite always looks worse during my menstration period

Hormonal changes and water retention that occur during menstruation are the factors to blame! Appearance of cellulite depends on the levels of estrogen which are constantly changing throughout the female cycle. The third phase of the cycles (luteal) is also when body produces the progesterone hormone. This phase is mostly characterised by water retention and blood circulation in the subcutaneous fat layer which makes the appearance worth!
